The genetic and cultural foundations of the Germanic folk were laid in the period 2000-1500 B.C., when a tall, long-skulled (dolichocephalic) Indogermanic people from southern Russia with horses and war chariots invaded and mixed with a broad-skulled (brachycephalic) agricultural people in northern Europe (who had built tombs out of large boulders or megaliths) and imposed their language on it. A couple of centuries later, those Germanic tribes developed into the two most powerful nations in Europe.Siegfried = Arminius Prlium Teutoburgiense At the moment, a bunch of Germanic tribes with no writing system defeated three roman legions. Instead, he individually chose to take that chance. For example: did Colombus determine the new trend of europeans trying to colonize or just plunder the new world, committing in the process a great genocide against most American peoples? Of course not! Roundness of earth was well know at his time the shortcut to India had been lost a couple of decades before if Colombus had failed that year, the next year someone else would have done the same.īut there are some people with the right skills in the right place at the right time, who really changed history.Īrminius could have done like other kidnapped-sons-of-local-dynasties did, and remain living in comfort as a Roman battle hero. To understand the total size of Arminius as a historical figure, you must take a look at the fact that most events in history are the result of social powers to which individuals only contribute their grain of sand (as we say in Argentina) or their two cents (as they like to say in usa). Hi posters… for those of you still there. I think the true fault lies with Varus as he had warnings and chose to ignore them. Whether it would be for the better of Europe, well that however is matter for alternate history historians to debate. If the Romans had won and successfully integrated Germania into the Roman Empire, Western Europe as we know it would be totally different. Though the Romans avenged its defeat, it never again attempted to regain the lost province. Whether he would have fallen for Arminius' deception can be only speculation, but I doubt it. Unfortunately, he met an untimely death when he fell from his horse. this became the short-lived province of Germania.
#Arminius varus series#
Drusus had pacified the region between the Rhine and Elbe Rivers in a series of brilliant campagns. Varus' role as commander was a result of an unfortunate accident that killed the very able Drusus Nero. Varus being totally inept, and what we would call today a political appointment, fell for Arminius' deception. Varus, the Roman General in charge, was told by his generals and his German allies that this was a trap. As such, three Roman Legions and, I believe 5,000 colonist, took a shorter path to their destination that was recommended by Arminius. As I understand it, the Romans thought that the region between the Rhine and Elbe River were pacified. Traitor or Freedom Fighter? Arminius' victory at the Tuetonburg Forest was a result of an ambush.
